ECUADOR

RESEARCH ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC VULNERABILITY TO LANDSLIDES

JULY 2018. During the last couple of months I have primarly focused on the research on socio-economic vulnerability to landslides from the Faculty of Engineering in Geology and Petroleum from the Ecuela Politécnica Nacional, and preparing, in collaboration with my colleagues from Quito and Ambato, an exhibition on natural hazards in Ambato. TWO NEW ACTIVITIES WITH A CULTURAL DIMENSION

JUNE 2018.  Since the beginning of April, I, Ariane Fontaine, am involved in a project called CinéCyclo. This project is led by two French people, Lucille Chauvin and Vincent Hanrion who came for two months to Ecuador to prepare it. Their goal is to cycle around the country passing by communities more or less isolated and to show movies in every village they cross. Read more

PROJECT OF ENGAGEMENT WITH  THE CIVIL SOCIETY

MAY 2018.  In Ecuador, on some universities, the students have to attend a minimum amount of hours of engagement with civil society, in order to obtain their diplomas. These projects have to engage both professors/researchers and students from the university and should benefit communities and community members. SCHOOL WORKSHOP: RISK MANAGEMENT TRAINING

MARCH 2018. In Ecuador, the training courses concerning the risk management dedicated to the students are seldom and it is complicated to access the public schools’ system with the volunteering status. France managed to do some workshops, also with the collaboration of the Red Cross. Read more

AVC WORKSHOP IN SELVA ALEGRE

MARCH 2018. The aim of this AVC workshop was to give to the rest of the team the tools to develop it ou use it in other communities and also was  to deliver to the Selva Alegre community a report on what are the difficulties of their area and how it can be fixed it. Read more

DEVELOP AN ACTION PLAN IN CASE OF DISASTER

JANUARY 2018. Eric Brossier and France Pinczon du Sel work with the Risk Management Unit of the municipality in different municipalities, first in the identification of their risks. Then, we determine preventive actions to be carried out, and finally a plan of action and emergency is built for the case of a disaster. Read more

A NEW COLLABORATION WITH THE ECUADORIAN INSTITUTO GEOFISICO

NOVEMBER 2017. Since November of 2017, Quito’s team started a new collaboration with the Ecuadorian Instituto Geofísico. It consists on translating into Spanish and synthetizing scientific papers published in English on renowned international scientific publications by personal and collaborators of Instituto Geofísico. Read more

ASSESS THE INTERESTS AND RISKS THAT THREATEN THE PROJECT AREA

SEPTEMBER 2017. During these three months in Ecuador and my first encounter with Latin America, I had to come across several challenges that helped me understand better how things work here. The way people communicate, their body language and their flexibility regarding time management are cultural aspects that needed some deep consideration in order to avoid misunderstandings when relating to Ecuadorian people. Read more

JUNE 2017. Since December 2016, an EU Aid Volunteers team has been deployed to Ecuador to develop a seismic and volcanic risk reduction project. These last two months have been very busy for the volunteers who have participated to several events and meetings with local actors working on the risk reduction in the country. Read more
